Set up GST, cash or accrual, and how often you report
Tell Billbook you're registered for GST, which basis you use and how often you lodge a BAS.
GST is the 10% tax on most things sold in Australia. Once you're registered, Billbook adds it to your invoices and works out your BAS (the activity statement you send the ATO) from your books.
How do I turn GST on?
- Open Settings.
- Under GST and financial year, tick Registered for GST.
- Choose the GST accounting basis and How often you lodge BAS.
- Choose Save changes.
Only the owner or an admin can change these.
Should I pick cash or accrual?
It decides when a sale or purchase counts for GST:
- Accrual (when you invoice) counts it on the invoice or bill date, paid or not. Most small businesses use this.
- Cash (when you’re paid) counts it when the money actually moves.
Use the one you told the ATO. Your accountant can confirm it.
How often do I report?
Pick Monthly, Quarterly or Annually to match what the ATO set for you. The GST and BAS screen lists your periods to suit.
What happens if I change these later?
Statements you haven't recorded as lodged are worked out on the new settings. Lodged ones keep the figures and basis they were lodged with.
Check your financial year too
Financial year ends and Time zone sit in the same box. They decide which period a date falls in.
