Variance review

See which of a client's accounts moved a lot against last year, and draft a question for the client about any of them.

Variance review lists the accounts that moved a lot between last year and this year, biggest first. It's your worklist for year-end review: anything unexpected, ask the client about.

How do I review a year?

  1. Open the client and go to BooksVariances.
  2. Pick the Financial year.
  3. Work down the list. Each row shows both years, the Change and the percentage.

Small movements are left out on purpose. A new account with nothing last year shows no percentage. If nothing moved much, the list is empty.

Where do the figures come from?

From the posted journals in the client's ledger, for this year and the year before. Import last year's trial balance (or a file with a prior column) to get comparatives.

Can Billbook draft the question for me?

Yes, if your firm turns on Variance-review client queries in Firm settingsTeam.

  1. Choose Draft query on a row.
  2. The sheet shows whether the movement is Material or Minor, and why.
  3. Read and edit the Question.
  4. Choose Save as client note, or Discard.

Drafting uses one of your firm's AI uses for the month.

Nothing is sent to the client. The question is saved in the client's ClientComms for you to follow up.
