The tax checklist and deductions
Send a client their yearly tax checklist, review their answers and put the deductions they logged onto the return.
- Send checklist
- Client answers
- Mark reviewed
- Deductions to return
The tax checklist is a set of yes or no questions your client answers in the client app, with documents. Last year's answers are filled in for them to confirm.
How do I send the checklist?
- Open the client and go to TaxChecklist & deductions.
- Choose Send checklist.
- The status shows With the client until they answer.
The checklist goes to the client's main contact if they use the client app, otherwise to another contact who does. If nobody at the client uses the app yet, it's saved but no email goes out. You can send one checklist per client per year, for the year picked on the client's tax sections.
The checklist copies your questions when you send it. Last year's yes or no answers carry over for the client to confirm, but details and files don't.
How do I review the answers?
- When the status is Answered, to review, read each answer and open any documents.
- Choose Mark reviewed.
- Need them to change something? Choose Hand back. It goes back to With the client, even after you've marked it reviewed.
Answers are grouped under Income, Deductions and Other, with any details and files the client added.
Answers carried over from last year show Not confirmed until the client confirms them.
How do I use the deductions they logged?
People log deductions and receipts in their app through the year. They show under the checklist with the date, category and receipt, and a total for each deduction label. You can't add or change them here: the client does that in their app.
- Start the year's return first.
- Choose Put totals on the return.
- The totals land on the matching deduction labels: car, travel, clothing, study, other work costs, gifts and donations, the cost of managing tax affairs, and other deductions.
The totals replace whatever is already on those labels. Labels with nothing logged are left alone. It doesn't work once the return is signed or lodged.
The deductions log is for people only. Companies, trusts and funds get the checklist without it.
How do I change the questions?
Open Firm settingsTemplates and pick a checklist, or choose Edit the questions in Templates on the client's checklist. There's one for people and one for companies, trusts and funds.
- Choose Add question and write the question.
- Pick its section, add help for the client if you like, and tick Ask for details or Ask for documents.
- Move questions up or down, or remove them.
- Choose Save.
Use built-in goes back to Billbook's questions. A checklist needs at least one question.
Changes apply to checklists you send from now on. Ones already sent stay as they are.
