Single Touch Payroll (STP)
Prepare and check the report the ATO needs for every pay, fix any problems, and finalise the year.
- Post pay run
- Prepare report
- Check
- Send
Single Touch Payroll (STP) is how employers tell the ATO what they paid, tax withheld and super, on or before each payday. It also fills in your employees' income statements, so there are no payment summaries at year end.

Billbook can't send STP reports to the ATO yet Coming soon. Report each pay through your current STP software. Billbook still builds and checks the figures so you can compare.
How do I report a pay?
- Post the pay run.
- Open PayrollSingle Touch Payroll. It's listed under Pays to report.
- Choose Prepare report.
- If anything is listed under Fix before sending, fix it on the employee's record, then Check again.
- Choose Send to the ATO Coming soon.
Billbook checks every employee's details and year-to-date figures before anything goes. Missing a date of birth or address is the usual culprit.
I fixed a pay after reporting it. What now?
Choose Send an update. It reports everyone's year-to-date figures as they stand, so the ATO matches your books.
How do I finalise the year?
After the last pay of the financial year, choose the Finalise button at the top of the page, then Prepare finalisation. This tells the ATO each person's income statement is ready for their tax return.
Fringe benefits
Gave someone a car or paid a private bill? Record it under Reportable fringe benefits on their record before you finalise.
What are closely held payees?
Family members paid by a small business. If you tick Closely held payees in PayrollPayroll settings, you report them each quarter instead of each pay.
